Standby Power

Standby power – a source of power when a primary supply fails – can be ‘uninterruptible’ (no evident break) or can be a supply of power which substitutes for the primary supply after a short break. Uninterruptible power is a fundamental requirement when running computer systems or equipment which cannot tolerate a failure.

We have been providing fuel cell standby power systems  and fuel cell UPS systems since 2006, mostly for use in IT server rooms where the demand is for uninterruptible power. Fuel cell standby power is popular where diesel generators, which are low-cost, cannot for environmental or planning reasons be implemented. Such a system demands high standards of reliability, which fuel cells provide with their low moving-part count and clean technology. We are able to supply fuel cell standby power systems from half a kilowatt  to a megawatt in size, the only major constaint at larger sizes being fuel storage considerations.

Keys to our success in this fuel cell UPS market have been: an understanding of the needs of IT users; familiarity with 17th Edition Wiring Regulations and in particular three-phase standards; a good working knowledge of hydrogen installation standards and our track record in managing projects to demanding timescales.
